Why Organic

Indulgence Defined

Why Choose Organic Coffee Beans?

Discerning coffee lovers value quality, full aroma freshly roasted coffee beans.  They understand that investing in responsibly sourced, sustainable coffee beans provides far-reaching benefits to the environment, to local communities, as well as to their own health.

If you relate to the statements above, also know that choosing organic beans offers additional benefits. But how significant could these benefits be?

NO PESTICIDES, HERBICIDES, OR FUNGICIDES

Did you know that approximately 97% of the world’s coffee beans are treated with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other harmful toxins? Consider the amount of chemicals you would consume on a daily basis, if you choose commercially farmed, non-organic coffee.

Most of the coffee that is sold today is grown in developing countries.  These regions have few to no regulations regarding the amount or types of chemicals and pesticides that may be used. This means that farmers can spray their crops with almost anything. Some of the chemicals commonly used by these farmers have already been banned in America, Europe, and Japan due to the proven harmful effects on the health of consumers.

Our mission at Bespoke Beans is to make organic coffee more easily available at affordable prices. A healthier cup with full-bodied aroma and flavour, at a price to suit your pocket.

BETTER SOIL & WATER QUALITY

Another benefit of organic farming practices is the reduced impact on the environment where the beans are grown.  Farmers who don’t use toxic chemicals rely on more sustainable practices that have been proven to increase nutrients in the soil. One of these eco-friendly farming methods is the use of “shade trees”, which protects the coffee plants from overexposure to sunlight. These trees keep the coffee cherries (beans) in prime condition, while their leaves supply additional nutrients to the soil.

This practice provides the following benefits:

● It improves the quality of the coffee beans
● The trees eliminate the need for chemical pesticides
● They preserve the local ecosystem through cleaner soil and water
● While helping to reduce deforestation and reduces carbon dioxide levels

SAFER FOR COFFEE GROWERS

The third significant benefit of choosing organic coffee that we want to cover here relates to the impact on coffee growers.

A survey of 81 farmers in Eastern Jamaica concluded that pesticide has been associated with significant occupational health effects. Most farmers reported suffering from at least one health symptom associated with pesticide handling, but safety practices were scarcely adopted. There was also the risk that other household members and the wider local community were exposed to pesticides. The lack of training on pesticide management, the role of health services and the cost for protective equipment seemed to be the most significant factors that influence current pesticide handling practices in eastern Jamaica.

There is a simple solution to combat this – choose to buy only organic coffee brands.

Fair Trade Certified Coffee means that farmers’ cooperatives deal directly with the retailers and get to sell their coffee for a worthy price. There is more transparency that means the coffee can be traced back to the growers, and it also means that a wage is guaranteed to growers so that market fluctuations won’t leave with a loss at the end of a season.
